The Art of Incense: Tradition, Quality, and Safe Enjoyment

At Washpool, we believe in the transformative power of aroma, whether it’s through our essential oils, candles, or other carefully crafted products.

As a maker, scent has always been a deeply personal part of my life - both in the Washpool workshop and at home. But every now and then, I’d catch a fragrance drifting from a family member’s room and realise… it wasn’t ours! It wasn’t the careful blend of botanicals and essential oils we pour so much thought into, but something else - something unknown. It made me pause. If my own family, our team’s families, and likely yours, too, are drawn to scents beyond what we create, then it matters where those scents come from.

That’s why, when we decided to offer incense, we sought out the best - an artisanal Japanese maker with over 300 years of dedication to craftsmanship, tradition, and purity. If we can’t make it ourselves, we’ll find those who do it beautifully, with the same care and integrity we value at Washpool.

Traditional Japanese Incense: A Legacy of Craftsmanship

Marukanou Murata, a revered incense maker with 300 years of tradition, represents the pinnacle of artistry and fragrance. Incense has been an essential part of Japanese and Buddhist culture for centuries, often used during prayers and rituals. The fragrance and smoke are believed to nourish the spirits of our ancestors, creating a sacred atmosphere. Once lit, the calming scent helps quiet the mind and bring about a peaceful state of being.

Each stick is a reflection of time-honored expertise, made with natural ingredients and a deep understanding of aromatic harmony. Whether you’re seeking a moment of mindfulness, a ritual for reflection, or simply a way to enhance your space, traditional Japanese incense offers a pure and refined experience.

How to Incorporate Incense into a Healthy Home

Choose Quality Incense

Not all incense is created equal. Look for incense made using traditional methods and high-quality natural ingredients, free from synthetic additives or fillers. Authentic Japanese incense offers a cleaner, more refined burn with beautifully balanced fragrances.

Burn Incense Safely

We love the calming ritual of burning incense, but safety should always come first. Be sure to burn incense on a heat-resistant surface, away from flammable items like curtains or books, and never leave it unattended. Keep incense out of reach of children and pets, and allow both the incense burner and any remnants to cool before handling, as they may remain hot for several minutes.

Ensure Proper Ventilation

While incense smoke is generally considered safe, it’s always best to burn it in a well-ventilated space. This helps prevent smoke buildup and reduces any potential irritation, ensuring a fresh and pleasant experience.

By choosing quality incense and following mindful burning practices, you can enjoy the beauty of this ancient tradition while maintaining a safe and healthy home environment.
